COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lincoln bug enthusiasts gathered last Thursday evening for Moth Night at Pioneers Park, where they used sweep nets, scent traps and bright lights to attract moths and other insects at the historic Cunningham Schoolhouse. The event was hosted by the Pioneers Park Nature Center (held during National Moth Week) and offered locals a hands-on way to learn about important nocturnal creatures.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday evening, Lincoln police arrested 34-year-old Hector Nunez (whose rental Jeep Compass was listed as overdue) after investigators discovered 92 blue M30 fentanyl pills, more than 44 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his car near North 1st Street and Cornhusker Highway.  KOLN
  • A 25-year-old Lincoln man, Shakye Patterson Edward, was arrested on Thursday after he was accused of shooting at a man near South 13th and E streets on Wednesday morning and later burglarizing Moore Pawn near 16th and M streets by stealing a red electric guitar, with police noting he had dried blood on his hands and wore the same clothing seen on video.  KOLN
  • A Palmyra man (56-year-old Thomas Jordan) was charged with misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide for the death of fallen Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Kyle McAcy, who was hit while responding to a Feb 17 crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland; he will appear in Cass County Court for arraignment on Aug 26 at 9 a.m.  KNOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln began demolishing the north side of the old Westbrook Music Hall near 11th and R streets last Friday — crews removed part of the building as the south side is renovated to join the new music facility. The new building, which opened last May, will host classes for the Glenn Korff School of Music and the project will finish in spring.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lincoln’s LPD Explorers program won first place in five drill events at a competition in St. Louis last week, showing skills in active shooter response, crime scene investigation and traffic stops. The free youth program for ages 14 to 20 will hold its next meeting on Aug. 20 at LPD headquarters.  Nebraska Now
  • University of Nebraska President Jeffrey Gold announced yesterday that the system cut over $20 million from its budget due to lower state and federal funding, and the cut may target low-enrollment programs, degrees and majors. The move builds on a $20 million reduction approved in June and a 5% tuition increase—forcing a review of departmental structures.  Nebraska Now
