COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lincoln's YMCA will host the 3-vs-3 basketball Railyard Rims tournament Saturday—its ninth year—with all proceeds funding YMCA programs and memberships. The event will take place downtown and continue its community support.  Lincoln Journal Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Carlos Aldalberto Hernandez, Jr., 31, was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for conspiring to distribute over 500 grams of meth—authorities had found 610 grams at his home during a May 2024 investigation and he will begin a five-year term of supervised release after his release.  KOLN
  • Police have identified Todd Pearson—aged 62—as the bicyclist fatally struck by an Amtrak train early Monday morning in north Lincoln, and officials noted he is the second train-related fatality in a week.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools have filled most teaching roles for the upcoming school year but continue recruiting for specialist positions such as speech—language pathologists, school psychologists and special education roles. They also have over 40 open classified positions including paraeducators, custodians, nutrition services workers and office staff ahead of classes beginning next month.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office has launched a recurring video series named Consumer Alerts to educate residents about scams—covering topics like Overpayment, Debt Relief and Social Media Impostor Scams. Free resources and a contact line are provided to help Nebraskans protect their money and personal information.  Fox Nebraska
  • The Lincoln Police Department announced plans to conduct three traffic enforcement projects in August that will target impaired driving from Aug. 15–30, school zone safety during arrival and dismissal times from Aug. 13–30, and unsafe practices in street work zones. The initiatives are funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office and aim to reduce crashes and injuries.  KOLN
