- ➤ Lincoln police are investigating after a 36-year-old man reported he was assaulted and robbed near Centennial Mall and O Street just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday—witnesses said four individuals approached him during a verbal altercation, and one charged him as he tried to defend himself with a scooter, leading the group to take his wallet, credit cards, ID and vehicle key fob. - ➤ A man convicted of illegally re-entering the U.S. after an aggravated felony conviction was sentenced in Omaha federal court on Friday to two years in prison—he will serve a three-year period of supervised release after his release. KOLN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tuesday marked the first day of school for kindergarteners, 6th graders and 9th graders at Lincoln Public Schools; Interim Superintendent John Skretta said he is excited for the year and will work to secure federal funding for key programs. The district’s five-year plan focuses on student outcomes and includes piloting a new math curriculum at five elementary schools with over 70 trained educators—plus the addition of 400 new teachers—to support learning and community engagement. - ➤ Officials from the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department presented two proposals at Tuesday’s meeting to improve the dangerous intersection at 10th and High, citing high traffic, speeding, curvature and low visibility. The lower-cost option would add a midblock pedestrian crossing median for $325,000 while the higher-cost option would install a pedestrian hybrid signal and closing median for $600,000 and the improvements are expected to take 18 to 24 months—officials are still seeking public feedback.
