  • Lincoln nonprofit I’ve Got A Name helps human trafficking survivors rebuild their lives with trust-building outreach — a service reaching both urban and rural communities — and plans to expand its support to adult survivors in Omaha. The organization focuses on assisting individuals to overcome the effects of their trauma.  KOLN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln reported a gas leak near East Campus at 1557 N. 33rd St. on Wednesday morning — 33rd Street was closed for safety.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Lincoln Police said that a major gas leak from a 2-inch gas line hit by a construction crew shut down part of 33rd Street between Holdrege and Potter near UNL’s East Campus on Wednesday at 9:20 a.m. while Black Hills Energy estimated repairs would take at least four hours and Lincoln Fire and Rescue blocked traffic.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • Lincoln Police are investigating a drive-by shooting on July 7 when a lighter colored 4-door sedan fired six gunshots on West Washington Street between Southwest 8th and 9th streets— they are also seeking tips on a July 30 incident when a man was caught on security footage briefly exposing himself near 26th and C streets.  KOLN
  • A 25-year-old man, identified as Zavion Zaire Jermaine Simmons, was arrested on suspicion of robbery early Wednesday when a local resident reported being threatened near North 27th and W streets—officers later detained him near North 27th and Holdrege.  Nebraska Now
  • A Lincoln woman lost nearly $260,000 — including cash, gold, and Bitcoin — to scammers after she followed instructions from callers she believed were from Amazon and the Treasury Department in May, police said.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools serves 10,000 breakfasts and 26,000 lunches each day to ensure every child eats regardless of ability to pay as part of its strategy for student wellbeing. The district also uses the LPS Foundation and Student Emergency Fund to help families with lunch debt and other needs—efforts aimed at boosting student success.  KOLN
  • Tuesday, the Nebraska School Financing Review Commission met to review the state’s K-12 funding formula (the Tax Equity and Educational Opportunities Support Act) used by more than 200 school districts since 1990. Commission Chair Dr. Bryan Maher and Senator Jana Hughes (who introduced LB 303) said the group will recommend changes to ease uneven local levies and better balance property tax reliance with state finances.  KNOP
