CRIME NEWS

  • Joesef Barraza was sentenced Thursday to life in prison and an extra sentence ranging from 120 to 150 years for killing Carly Schaaf in 2021 and raping three women — a verdict reached after a jury trial.  Nebraska Now
  • A 28-year-old man from Lincoln was sentenced to life in prison — without parole on August 14 after being convicted of first-degree murder and raping three women, including 23-year-old Carly Schaaf who died after being drugged and assaulted at his home.  KFOR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Lincoln announced Thursday that construction started on a transmission main along 98th Street linking the current water source from the Platte River to a future wellfield at the Missouri River — the project is funded with $36 million from American Rescue Plan Act money and will be completed in 2026 with water flowing from both sources by 2048.  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bluestem Lake near Lincoln remains under a health alert for another week after tests showed microcystin levels above safe limits—swimming beaches are closed while boating and fishing continue.  Nebraska Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lincoln's Saltdogs won 9-8 over the Sioux Falls Canaries on August 13 after Spencer Henson hit a grand slam and a walk-off solo home run that rallied the team from an 8-1 deficit — evening the series at one game apiece. The game was played at Haymarket Park before 2,071 fans.  KFOR
