COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Enough DV is hosting a fundraiser poker run to fight domestic violence with registration at Frontier Harley-Davidson from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.—tickets cost $20 for a single rider and $30 for a couple. Participants will ride from the starting point to stops at Val Tavern in Valparaiso, Don’s Dar in David City, Good Ol’ Days in Staplehurst, and Bottle Rocket in Seward before finishing at Braska Bar in Lincoln.  KOLN

CRIME NEWS

  • Officials released a report from the Domestic Abuse Death Review Team showing 72 domestic violence deaths since July 21, 2022, with 15 deaths already in 2025 compared to 13 in 2024—most victims were killed with firearms.  KNOP
  • Lincoln police reported that on Thursday a 24-year-old man received texts and calls from a scammer claiming to be the Lancaster County Sheriff—asserting that a dating app contact was a minor and demanding money to avoid charges—and they quickly shut down the number to prevent further fraud.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Police located an 11-year-old boy who went missing Friday morning near Holmes Lake+ officers found him safe and thanked the public for help.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven students received the Good Life, Great Journey scholarships at NDOT headquarters on Friday in Lincoln—each student got full tuition, fees, books, tools, housing and travel help plus a paid NDOT internship. They are enrolled at approved technical colleges in fields from electrical technology to computer aided design and will build careers at NDOT.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown streets and those on the UNL City Campus had closures scheduled this weekend—M Street was closed Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for student move-in, three northbound lanes of 10th Street will close today from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for private crane work, and N Street will close Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with additional move-in restrictions on 14th and Vine Streets through next Wednesday.  KFOR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Omaha native Tory Pittman III, rated as the nation’s top safety prospect for 2027, committed to Nebraska on August 15 via social media—he earned offers from Penn State, Oregon, Michigan, USC, LSU, Tennessee and Notre Dame. The five-star recruit recorded 34 tackles and two interceptions as a freshman and 54 tackles with three interceptions as a sophomore at Omaha Central.  Nebraska Now
  • On Friday, Nebraska Football awarded its final single‐digit jersey number to senior cornerback Ceyair Wright—adding to this week's assignments where transfer Dane Key received No. 6 and sophomore Riley Van Poppel got No. 5. Returning players and new faces received their numbers with sophomore Jacory Barney Jr at No. 2, junior Janiran Bonner at No. 4, senior linebacker Javin Wright at No. 0 and sophomore Vincent Shavers Jr switching to No. 9.  Nebraska Now
