  • Nebraska can lead in making sustainable aviation fuel from corn and soybeans, but Congressman Flood said more work is needed to build on the state’s advantage. Renewable Fuels Nebraska pointed to the pipeline running across the state and legislative changes that let ethanol plants capture CO2—fueling future growth in biofuel production.  KNOP

  • Today the Sheldon Museum of Art opened an exhibit curated by community members who picked art pieces featuring red — such as a watermelon sculpture chosen by Husker sports director Kevin Sjuts; the exhibit will run through Dec. 31.  KOLN
  • Marla Weber and her sister placed a headstone on their great-great-grandmother’s unmarked grave near Kramer in Lancaster County after uncovering records that showed she jumped into a flooded creek to save her son nearly 140 years ago—her brave act is now preserved for her family. They organized a family reunion to gather more pieces of her history and honor her legacy.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • Lincoln Transportation and Utilities announced that northbound South 27th Street between J and L streets and its east sidewalk will be closed today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for private property crane work—travelers should use the detour via J, 33rd, and O streets.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Mayor Gaylor Baird was elected second vice president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and stands in line to become the organization’s president in 2027 — she is the second Lincoln mayor to earn this role. She uses her position to share Lincoln's story with federal leaders and help secure funds for local improvements.  Lincoln Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Lincoln-Lancaster Health Department launched Credible Minds, an online mental well-being platform that gives community members access to over 10,000 self-care resources and assessments to help understand their mental health. The tool was developed with Bryan Medical + CHI and will track usage without collecting personal data.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kayma Carpenter returned from injury and scored two goals in Nebraska's 6-0 regular season opener over Southern Indiana—she now enters her junior season and plans to work on defense and tactics in upcoming games.  Nebraska Now
  • The University of Nebraska Omaha announced that it is mourning the death of graduate student-athlete Deng Mayar, who joined the basketball team this offseason after playing two years at North Dakota. He was 22—university officials extended their condolences to his family and teammates.  Nebraska Now
  • Ella Rudney scored the equalizing goal on Sunday afternoon at Barbara Hibner Stadium—her effort helped Nebraska secure a 1-1 tie with Missouri State and achieved new career highs. The Huskers will travel to Stillwater on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. to face Oklahoma State.  KNOP
