CRIME NEWS

  • Robinson Contreras of Columbus, who was extremely drunk, kicked two police officers near 21st Street and Atlas Avenue in north Lincoln around 4:30 p.m. on Monday—officers handcuffed him and arrested him on suspicion of third-degree assault, obstructing a peace officer, and resisting arrest.  Nebraska Now
  • Lincoln Police said a scammer posing as Sgt. Alton or Aldon called a local woman on Monday and convinced her to send $500 through CashApp for an ankle monitor program—officials stressed they never ask for money and urged residents to verify officer details.  Nebraska Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools reported that chronic absenteeism increased since the pandemic, with about 25% of students missing more than 10% of school days—roughly 11,854 students affected last year. The district explained that reasons include illness, truancy, transportation and anxiety and that it will use staged interventions such as sending home letters and possibly involving the county attorney at the 20-day mark.  KOLN
  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Midwest Roadside Safety Facility tested vehicles at the Lincoln Airport on Wednesday to study the factors that make cars crash off the road—40 drivers, including professionals and students, drove equipped cars with sensors to record braking, friction and acceleration. Drivers will return on Thursday and Friday and each will earn $200 after completing the course.  KOLN

  • The Lincoln Police Department will host the SHE WEARS THE BADGE recruiting event on Tuesday, Aug.26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at its Southeast Team Station near Pine Lake Road and South 70th Street—aimed at encouraging more women to explore law enforcement careers with panels and technology demos.  KOLN
  • Lincoln is hosting an open house today on its Safe Streets Lincoln project that aims to reduce serious injury crashes by 60% and eliminate traffic fatalities by 2045—residents can learn the details of the plan.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • Aramark is adding new food options for fall football at Memorial Stadium, with items such as Tunnel Walk tacos and Husker burgers—made with red buns—for fans. The company will start alcohol sales on Sept. 6 at 59 points with Walk Thru Bru stations—fans must show valid IDs and can purchase only two drinks at a time—to promote safe service.  KNOP
  • Yesterday, UNL and Kros Strain Brewing unveiled the official craft beer Cornhusker Crusher—a citrus wheat ale that supports student athletes and is available at Memorial Stadium and local venues, while Bud Light introduced its limited-edition Husker can to be sold at upcoming college games.  KNOP
