- ➤ Police caught 63-year-old Lynn Cavanaugh (found sleeping in a tent with a stolen E-bike) on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. near Oak Creek in northwest Lincoln after officers discovered two bags of drugs and an explosive device containing over 431 times the legal powder limit; he had asked for hospital help before being arrested on charges of controlled substance and explosive possession. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Last year, the University of Nebraska Foundation broke its record by raising over $416 million to fund student scholarships, academic programs, athletic teams, faculty, research and capital projects across the system. The drive included contributions from 60,602 individuals and marks an increase from the previous year’s $388.8 million — nearly all gifts were designated to specific purposes. Lincoln Journal Star

- ➤ On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that individual members can challenge Lincoln gun regulations—while the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association lacks the legal standing to sue. The case, which contests an order banning weapons from city vehicles and properties, will now move to Lancaster County District Court for review. Nebraska Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln hospitals celebrated the launch of the State Directed Payment Program that helps keep hospitals financially stable and care for patients in rural areas after LB1087 passed by a 45—0 vote. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved the program on June 27 and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services made the first payment in late August—ensuring hospitals receive federal funds without increasing costs for taxpayers.
