CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lancaster County Court ruled on Wednesday that Lincoln man Alaric Harden, charged with first-degree murder in the death of Larry Cole, is not mentally competent to stand trial for a 2023 case for the fourth time—he will remain at the Lincoln Regional Center with a competency hearing set for Oct. 30 at 10 a.m.—after he refused medication and became hostile. - ➤ Jason Frost, 45, was sentenced Wednesday to eight to 12 years in prison for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman near Interstate 80 and Interstate 180 in Lincoln—he received credit for nine months and may be eligible for parole in a little more than three years while he must register as a sex offender for 15 years. - ➤ Fitting Futures — formerly The White Cane Foundation — has rebranded to clearly support underserved students by giving them new clothes, shoes and hygiene products to help boost their confidence in school. Started in 2019 through a local family’s tradition, the program has helped over 800 students and provided new outfits to 2,510 children across 19 schools this school year. KOLN

- ➤ The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office filed a 50-page brief on Tuesday arguing that the court wrongly dismissed its felony case against former History Nebraska director Trevor Jones—accused of redirecting $270,000 in funds meant for historical preservation after his 2022 resignation—with Jones’ lawyers contending that his right to a speedy trial was violated. - ➤ Today, the mayor announced a new police contract proposal that will boost officer retention and public safety by raising wages 17% over the next three years and adding benefits such as enhanced leave and a wellness program — measures aimed at keeping LPD staffing near 97% of authorized strength. The contract will be considered at a City Council public hearing and vote on September 29 before it can take effect. Fox Nebraska

- ➤ After Tuesday's practice, Nebraska football offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen said he was unhappy with the offense in the win over Cincinnati because the team scored only 20 points in nine possessions and did not see the explosive plays he expected.
