COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, Memorial Stadium hosted nearly 1,000 people at Husker Heroes, a free event where people with special needs and their families met Nebraska athletes from various sports. Organized by One Coalition—local nonprofits that support those with special needs—the event has been a tradition since 2010.  KNOP

BUSINESS NEWS

  • James Arthur Vineyards — Nebraska’s oldest operating winery — won awards for three wines at the International Eastern Wine Competition in early September in Windsor, California. The vineyard’s Sweet Charlotte earned Double Gold and Best of Class with a score of 96, while Bourbon Barrel-Aged Frontenac won silver and 2023 Edelweiss received gold.  Lincoln Journal Star

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lincoln — Nebraska will offer financial incentives through the NiRIA program to farmers who lower nitrogen fertilizer use for the 2026 season. Farmers growing corn, sugar beets, wheat and potatoes must apply by November 15 with payments based on priority areas where Priority A earns $15 per acre, Priority B earns $12 and Priority C earns $10.  Fox Nebraska

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Nebraska-Lincoln will use a $1 million gift from Abbott earned when Husker Nation won last year's blood drive contest to fund programs that boost students' mental and physical health. About $450,000 will pay for a full-time well-being coordinator and up to nine student-led projects—while the remaining funds support extra health grants and a new program for small cost help.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • At Lincoln Northeast High School, drama teacher Bruce Chapman has inspired students for 41 years since he began teaching in 1985 (including former student Anthony Anderson, who now teaches at the school). He is seen as a mentor who creates a safe classroom where students feel they can be themselves.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Common Cause Nebraska filed a lawsuit Monday to block Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen from sharing sensitive voter information with federal officials. The group seeks a temporary restraining order to prevent the transfer of voter data that they say violates state law.  Nebraska Now
  • State Auditor Mike Foley accused part-time director Trenton Behr of padding work hours and filing false unemployment claims to collect about $20,700 in unearned pay from the Nebraska Abstractors Board of Examiners. The 54-page report said lax oversight allowed the fraud—Behr, who also worked full-time and took classes, was replaced by an interim director as the board plans to review the time cards.  Nebraska Examiner
  • The Nebraska Department of Transportation said three I-180 ramps—southbound to westbound Cornhusker, southbound to eastbound Cornhusker, and eastbound Cornhusker to southbound—will be closed tonight, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings for pavement repairs with each ramp reopening at 6 a.m. Drivers are advised to choose alternate routes since no detours are provided.  KOLN

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking more blood donors in the Big Ten’s We Give Blood drive as it trails Wisconsin for a $1 million prize that last year funded student health improvements. Donations given since August 27 can still be logged at three Lincoln and five Omaha locations — urging more community participation.  KNOP

  • Nebraska's football team will face Michigan State on Oct. 4 in a Homecoming game with a 3 p.m. kickoff that will be televised by FS1—Memorial Stadium has marked its 407th consecutive sellout.  KNOP
