- ➤ A new resource center called Hope House opened Thursday morning at First Plymouth Church to help Lincoln neighbors access food, housing, utility, healthcare and mental health services. The center, housed in a former church leader home and partnering with local groups like The Gathering Place — Lincoln Literacy and CenterPointe, is open every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. KOLN
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Timpte Inc., through its subsidiary Thunderstone Manufacturing, opened a new facility at the Lincoln Airport industrial park to produce semi-trailers, trailer tarps, marine accessories and other agricultural tools. The new facility cost $28 million —plus $7 million for advanced equipment—and plans to hire more than 100 workers as it serves local and national customers. KOLN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ EducationQuest announced that it awarded 24 Nebraskan students a total of $138,000 in Reaching Your Potential Scholarship funds—$3,000 a year for two-year college students and $6,300 a year for four-year recipients. The program, which began in 2000, helps low-income students overcome obstacles to college. Fox Nebraska
- ➤ On Tuesday, Aging Partners hosted Lincoln’s first free digital literacy workshop for seniors—30 participants brought their own tablets, laptops and phones for hands-on help with voicemail, photo storage and online safety—using UNL student volunteers. Organizers plan to offer two more sessions on Oct. 15 and Nov. 12 to address emerging questions about device use and AI. Nebraska News Service
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Nebraska Healthy Families and Workplaces Act will take effect on Oct. 1—businesses with 11 or more employees must provide paid sick time, letting workers accrue leave after 80 hours of employment with limits that vary by company size. Employers must post written notice of the new law starting Sept. 15. KOLN
- ➤ Lancaster County Engineering submitted its six-year road and bridge plan for 2026-2031 with a new Waverly Road bridge nearing completion by the end of 2025 and a $3M Salt Creek bridge planned for next year. The plan details two major projects on Saltillo and S.68 streets—set for public review on Oct 14 at City Hall—with funding shared between county funds and grants. KOLN
- ➤ Lincoln Transportation and Utilities announced that several streets will close Sept. 28 and Sept. 29 for an event and a water main replacement project. The closures include the Pumpkin Run route on Sept. 28 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the eastbound turn lane at the Nebraska Parkway and South 27th Street intersection on Sept. 29 with detours recommended and work expected to finish by late October. - ➤ Chamique Holdsclaw, a celebrated women's basketball icon, will share her personal mental health journey with Lincoln residents ahead of Mental Illness Awareness Week at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m.—the event will also feature a mental health fair and a book signing. She will discuss her struggles with depression and bipolar disorder and stress the importance of seeking help. Fox Nebraska
- ➤ Team Jack Foundation is hosting its 13th Radiothon fundraiser to support pediatric brain cancer research and honor namesake Jack Hoffman—who passed after his battle with the disease; the fundraiser will stream on Husker Radio Network and feature local activities near Elwood. KOLN
- ➤ BraveBe has launched an online tool called Brave fACEs that uses a 90-second assessment to help Lincoln residents understand childhood trauma — it lets adults and children with adult help check for signs of abuse, neglect, and positive support. The assessment gives a score with a report on possible health outcomes and is part of efforts started in November 2024 to track community awareness. KOLN

- ➤ Nebraska women's basketball now offers 5 Mini Plans that let fans choose five home game tickets for $65, saving $3 compared with single-game purchases. - ➤ Rudy Sautron earned his second Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week honor on Sept. 25 after setting a Nebraska tournament record with a three round total of 200 at the Git-R-Done Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln + his final round score of 64 helped the Huskers win a team title for the first time since 2012.
