BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Starbucks near 12th and P streets in downtown Lincoln announced it will permanently close this week—part of a global shift that will also cut 900 nonretail jobs—and reduce the city’s count to 13 stores.  KOLN
  • On Friday, Kawasaki Rail Car Lincoln Inc. reached a milestone by completing its 3,500th rail car at its Lincoln manufacturing facility—this rail car, built as part of a series produced since 2001, is an R211 made for New York City Transit.  KOLN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • High school students attended a Youth Climate Summit at the university’s east campus on Friday, where experts explained how climate change impacts Nebraska’s economy, society, and mental health. The event allowed students to ask questions and network to learn how they can protect the state’s resources for a healthier future.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jim Pillen rejected a proposal to relax liquor rules that would let customers touch employees during service—he said the change was unsafe given a recent corruption indictment involving former director Hobert Rupe. The rule would have removed language limiting physical contact—raising concerns about potential misconduct at licensed venues.  KNOP

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Seward Bluejays beat the Lincoln Northwest Falcons 28-17 Friday night at Union Bank — Trust Stadium, with Peyton Else scoring early and Sam Sagehorn completing a 40-yard touchdown pass. The win moved the Bluejays to 3-2 while the Falcons fell to 1-4, and Seward will face Grand Island Northwest next week while the Falcons take on York Friday.  Nebraska Now
  • Lincoln Lutheran defeated Raymond Central 24—14 Friday night in Channel 8’s Game of the Week, boosting its record to 4—1 while Raymond Central fell to 3—2.  Nebraska Now
  • Former Husker offensive lineman and radio host Matt Vrzal died and is remembered for his work on the team and his role with the Husker Hangover radio show—he also coached at Omaha Skutt Catholic School and ran Piezon’s Pizzeria.   • The Lincoln East football team extended its winning streak to four games by beating Kearney 17-10 at Seacrest Field Friday night. The Spartans forced four turnovers—two interceptions and two fumble recoveries—in the first half and will face Millard North next Friday.  Nebraska Now
