COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Momo Pizzeria hosted its annual Pooches on the Patio event on Sunday to raise funds for the Capital Humane Society to help pets find homes—activities included a silent auction, live band and pizza.  KOLN
  • Nearly 9,000 kids in Lincoln are without a bed and Sleep in Heavenly Peace raised $104,000 to build 400 beds with help from St. Marks Church volunteers. The nonprofit will deliver the beds with mattresses, sheets, pillows, and bedding on Oct. 11—ensuring every child has a proper place to sleep.  KOLN
  • One Lincoln woman loans 250 dresses from Sandy’s Boutique to low-income teens so they can have homecoming or prom dresses when families struggle with high costs. She also offers makeup, nail polish, and hair styling—services that boost confidence—and plans to expand the program in the future.  Nebraska Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Construction for a new hub for Lincoln's cultural centers will begin after the groundbreaking Wednesday near 22nd and Y streets, and it will bring together spaces for four local organizations. The 62,000-square-foot center—costing about $19 million—will include a cafeteria, art gallery, meeting rooms and rental spaces, with work expected to take 18 months.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • After investigation and discussion, officials have proposed Block 90 east of the Cornhusker Hotel as the site for a new Lincoln convention center—further planning steps are expected.  Lincoln Journal Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC predicts a moderate flu season that will depend on vaccination rates, and Lincoln residents can get their flu shots at local pharmacies and the health department starting in September or October. Experts advise getting the shot at least two weeks before flu cases rise—this will help lower the spread during winter.  Lincoln Journal Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football games across Lincoln-area schools on Friday saw Lincoln East lose to Kearney 17-10 after forcing four turnovers — Seward beat Lincoln Northwest 28-17 — and Lincoln Lutheran improve to 4-1 with a 24-14 win over Raymond Central, marking their best start since 2017.  Nebraska Now
  • On Sunday, over 3,800 kids ran in Lincoln's 24th annual Pumpkin Run when downtown streets were closed to make a safe one-mile route starting at 10 a.m. The Nebraska Sports Council hosted the event (to help kids stay active) with six heats along the course.  KOLN
