- ➤ A Lincoln nonprofit said they served over 2,400 meals last week and saw up to 220 people waiting for meals, so they have stopped offering seconds due to high food demand—federal benefit cuts are causing more households to struggle and the need is expected to grow this winter. Nebraska Now
- ➤ A Firehouse Subs restaurant in Lincoln will host a Touch-the-Truck event on Sunday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 200 N. 66th St.—families can explore a fire truck and meet local first responders while the NFPA partners with the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to provide fire safety materials featuring Sparky the Fire Dog. - ➤ Capital Humane Society said Zephyr—a 9-month-old puppy found weak in a pumpkin patch near Nebraska City last week—has gained 4 pounds since she arrived last Friday. The staff said she now wags her tail more even though she still needs help to stand and they are running tests to check for other health issues. Nebraska Now

- ➤ Trivia with a Mission will take place on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple to raise donations for Lincoln Lancaster County Crime Stoppers—an event where teams of eight are invited to enjoy trivia, music, food, and drinks to support the program's donation-based funding. KOLN
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Cultural Centers of Lincoln Collaborative broke ground on a 62,000-square-foot hub near 21st and Vine on the former Cushman site, where several cultural centers will be housed. The building is estimated to cost nearly $23 million and will be completed in about a year and a half—supporters are also working to raise the final $7.7 million needed. KOLN

- ➤ Officials announced a $1.2M EPA grant will fund environmental assessments at an abandoned grain elevator and former oil storage facility in Haymarket—studies that will guide future redevelopment. Lincoln Journal Star

- ➤ Two Nebraska lawmakers requested a public briefing on the McCook prison conversion into an ICE detention center to better understand the financial impact and relocation of more than 180 inmates. State Sen. Rob Clements declined the request—saying discussion will occur during mid-biennium budget hearings starting in January. Nebraska Examiner
- ➤ Nebraska voters passed a paid sick leave law in November that guarantees more workers receive paid time off— the law took effect Wednesday. Lincoln Journal Star

- ➤ On Wednesday morning, Nebraska announced its 2026 baseball schedule which lists 56 games—23 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park and 19 against recent NCAA Tournament teams. The Huskers will start the season in the MLB Desert Invitational on Feb 13 in Scottsdale and then face series and tournaments through May. KFOR
- ➤ Nebraska baseball released its 56-game 2026 schedule on Wednesday and will face 19 games against eight NCAA Tournament competitors such as Auburn, Creighton, Florida State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Oregon and USC. The season will start with the MLB Deser Invitational on Feb. 13, include a game against Creighton on May 12 and a three-game series with Minnesota from May 14—16, and the Huskers will play in the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha next season.
