ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 2025 Nebraska Rural Poll shows rural residents rate protecting jobs, lowering prices, and building international ties as very important for trade policy, with more emphasis on lower prices than last year. The poll also shows younger people and construction workers care most about these issues, and a webinar on the report is scheduled for Oct. 9.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, several Lincoln streets are closed from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the UNL homecoming parade—StarTran routes follow detours—and local homes remain accessible. A Street will close Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for utility work while Cotner Boulevard will close Monday for pavement repairs expected to finish by Oct. 17.  Nebraska Now
  • Farmers who rely on federal funds and reports face uncertainty after the government shutdown began Wednesday. Monthly crop reports and relief payments remain delayed — officials warn that the disruption may worsen as the shutdown continues.  KNOP
  • Inspector General Doug Koebernick’s report showed that Nebraska’s prison system remains in an overcrowding emergency as it ranks first by operational capacity and second by design capacity with over 5,700 inmates housed across nine facilities. The system will face changes as relocations from storm damage and the transition of the McCook Work Ethic Camp to an ICE detention center occur—while a new prison in Lincoln is expected to help lower overall capacity.  KNOP
  • State Sen. John Cavanaugh has filed a formal complaint challenging Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission’s emergency regulations—he says the rules limit product choices and only let in-state doctors recommend cannabis, which goes against the will of Nebraska voters. The commission will hold a public hearing on Oct 15 at the Nebraska State Office Building—lawmakers warn that continued delays could lead to further legislative action.  Nebraska Examiner
  • Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and LFR Chief Dave Engler will announce a grant—meant to fund the hiring of more LFR personnel—at a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday.  KOLN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nebraska Hospital Association warned that telehealth services were harmed after Medicare waivers expired on September 30, forcing hospitals to reschedule visits for seniors and rural patients during the shutdown. The group said that a proposal to cut funding from the Rural Health Transformation Program could worsen access to care.  KOLN

  • On Wednesday night, dozens gathered at CHI Health St. Elizabeth’s for the 15th annual Breast Cancer Survivors Ladies’ Night to honor survivors and highlight new treatment advances. Guests made their own bouquets and ended the evening watching the hospital lit pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month—showing that beating the disease is possible.  KOLN
