- ➤ Lincoln Police Department and Lincoln Fire Rescue will host their second annual Halloween Swearing-In for families on October 23 at the Public Safety Center—6601 Pine Lake Road. Children dressed as first responders may be sworn in during one of two sessions from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. and 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.—officials will offer tours, photos, and treats. KOLN

- ➤ WarHorse Gaming secured $300 million in startup loans in a five-year deal to expand its casino operations and begin building a new casino in South Sioux City. The deal will boost renovations at its Lincoln and Omaha locations + further grow its state-regulated gaming business. KOLN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Nebraska Board of Regents heard public comments on proposed budget cuts of over $27 million Friday as professors, staff and students raised concerns about academic programs and leadership transparency. Additional hearings will run through October 10 to gather more feedback—details from these sessions will help shape the final plan. KNOP
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lincoln drivers are advised by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to be careful during fall as deer become active near dawn and dusk—bucks searching for does may be bolder and less wary of vehicles. Motorists should slow down near shelterbelts, woodlots, rivers and creeks and follow safety tips to avoid collisions and damage. KNOP

- ➤ Fourteen rescue dogs and their handlers gathered in Lincoln this week to receive FEMA certification (a process vital for live find and cadaver search canine teams) at the Lincoln Fire & Rescue training center. Participants from Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, and Washington train together to locate missing persons during emergencies and disasters. KOLN
- ➤ Fines for speeding in Lincoln have increased for the first time since 1996 as a new state law updated our municipal code — fines now range from $50 for going 1 to 5 mph over the limit to $400 for speeds over 36 mph and are doubled in school and construction zones. The extra court costs will go to the school district. KOLN
- ➤ Troopers are working with partner agencies—Lincoln Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, UNL Police Department and the Nebraska Department of Transportation—to keep roads safe around Memorial Stadium for the upcoming Husker game. They use the NSP Aviation Support Unit to manage traffic and share updates via Nebraska 511. KOLN
- ➤ State senators and county officials met on Friday at the Capitol to discuss Legislative Resolution 195—which calls for a study of unfunded mandates that have forced counties to spend millions on services like criminal justice and extension programs.
