COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MADD organized its annual Nebraska Walk around Holmes Lake on Sunday to raise funds and support for families impacted by impaired driving—hundreds of locals joined the event along Memory Mile honoring loved ones lost.  KOLN
  • A Lincoln restaurant, MōMō Pizzeria and Ristorante near 84th Street and Pioneers Boulevard, held a fundraiser on Sept. 28 — Pooches on the Patio — and donated $16,500 to Capital Humane Society to help hundreds of pets.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska now has only 81 pay phones left, found in hospitals, airports, and small-town stores, and maintained under a 1968 law — which requires one phone per municipality — even as most people use cellphones.  KNOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Pius X broke ground on a $28.7 million project on Sunday to improve its learning, sports, and chapel facilities. The school will add a new learning center, athletic facility, and renovated chapel — a plan backed by Bishop James Conley and boosted by an enrollment increase of about 30 students.  Nebraska Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, Nebraska earned its first conference win by beating Michigan State 38-27, with running back Emmett Johnson scoring three touchdowns and safety DeShon Singleton making two key interceptions—turning the tide in the game. The Huskers improved to 4-1 on the season and will travel to Maryland next week for their first Big Ten road trip at 2:30 p.m. on BTN.  KFOR
  • Lincoln golf courses Holmes and Pioneers are planned for upgrades—Holmes is slated for a $1.9M irrigation system replacement and Pioneers will receive a facelift to its cart path—as interest in the sport grows.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • Foreign exchange students attended Saturday’s Nebraska football game at Memorial Stadium—about 200 joined the crowd, with many watching a game for the first time while the program seeks more host families for future seasons.  KOLN
  • The Nebraska soccer team took one shot on goal and lost 3-0 to the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday in Evanston — it will play Purdue on Oct. 9 at Barbara Hibner Stadium at 7:05 p.m.  KNOP
