BUSINESS NEWS

  • North Lincoln will welcome the new Chick-fil-A on Oct. 16 at a location near 27th Street and Enterprise Drive where it will serve guests Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.—offering dine-in, drive-thru, carry-out, delivery, mobile pick-up and Mobile Thru while hosting a cow attire promotion for a free meal; local owner Mike Stice, who also manages the Chick-fil-A at 48th & O, plans a $25,000 donation to support hunger relief and expects to create about 90 new jobs.  KOLN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lincoln Children's Zoo will launch its Zoo Lights Powered by LES event from November 21 to December 30 with nightly light shows from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. except November 27, December 24 and 25 — early ticket sales will begin for members on October 21 and the public on October 23 while proceeds support zoo winter operations.  KFOR
  • University of Nebraska—Lincoln scholar Kelli Boling published research showing that true crime media can hurt co-victims by invading their privacy and deepening emotional trauma while it sometimes helps investigations by keeping cases visible. Interviews with 20 co-victims revealed they face unwanted attention and inaccuracies in reporting and called for clearer ethical standards in media production.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LES will hold a public meeting on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Kevin Wailes Operations Center to discuss its 2026 budget proposal that features a 3% increase in retail electric rates due to rising power and transmission costs. The LES Administrative Board will vote on the proposal on Oct. 17 and, if approved, it will move to the city council for a public hearing in November.  KOLN
  • State Attorney General Mike Hilgers filed a lawsuit against OPPD over its plan to refuel and retire units at North Omaha Station, arguing that the changes undermine the affordability and reliability mandated by the Legislature—threatening to lower capacity by 40% and increase customer costs. The suit seeks an injunction to stop the planned retirement of three natural gas units and the conversion of two coal units.  KOLN
  • Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird discussed a proposed ordinance to protect community members — especially older adults — from crypto ATM and kiosk fraud at a news conference held Thursday, October 9 at 10 a.m.  KOLN
  • Lincoln Electric System held a public meeting Thursday to review its 2026 budget proposal, which includes a 3% rate increase due to rising power and transmission costs — officials cut travel, training, and limited new hires to five. The board will vote on the proposal next Friday before the city council considers it in November.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center will undergo a full seating and parking overhaul starting June 8—this renovation will boost capacity to more than 10,000 and upgrade bleachers to chairbacks before the 2026 Nebraska volleyball season. Fans will be notified by April and can choose their seats during a five-minute 3D map window after membership upgrades begin in December.  KFOR
