ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska farmers face tough challenges as a 20% Chinese tariff has made soybeans uncompetitive—data show that last year, over $980 million in soybean exports went to China while current exports now stand at zero. They say a new trade deal or alternative markets will be needed as tariffs on steel, aluminum, and fertilizer continue to drive costs up.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and staff at McDonald Elementary celebrated at their end-of-quarter assembly+ the school received a prestigious award. School officials said the honor reflects the school’s commitment to academic excellence+ marking an important milestone.  KNOP
  • Former Lincoln Public Schools superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman retired last December and served as an emeritus until June but did not exchange emails with district officials while receiving $83,000 in separation contributions; the district explained his role was meant to ease the transition (and he was banned from school property per district policy).  KFOR
  • Nebraska Wesleyan said on Thursday, October 9th that it will cut 14 full- and part-time staff positions and reduce hours for three others because of budget pressures from lower enrollment and rising costs—each affected employee received severance and health insurance, and a faculty advisory group will review academic programs to help stabilize the budget this academic year.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lincoln Transportation and Utilities announced the closure of Alvo Road between Seventh and 14th Streets for asphalt repairs beginning Monday and expected to finish by Tuesday. Travelers are advised to use an alternate route — 14th Street to Fletcher Avenue to First Street — while driving carefully.  KOLN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lincoln Regional Center hosted its 16th annual Walk for Mental Health Awareness on Friday to help people learn about mental health care and find helpful resources—officials said every step in recovery matters.  KOLN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Several area high school football teams secured key district wins Friday. Lincoln Southeast defeated North Platte 40—7 while other teams posted decisive scores, including a 71—0 win, in contests played on October 10.  KNOP
  • The Nebraska women’s basketball team will face Illinois on Jan. 24, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena—both teams are NCAA tournament members and split their last season matchups. The game will aim to draw a large crowd as the Huskers continue their strong home attendance streak.  Fox Nebraska
  • The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team beat Washington 3-0 on Friday with set scores of 25-14, 25-18, and 25-16 at John Cook Arena—improving its record to 15-0 and marking its 53rd straight home win.  KNOP
  • Lincoln Pius X won a double overtime football game on Friday night at home against Lincoln Standing Bear by scoring 21 to 14, with a fullback dive giving them the winning edge. The Thunderbolts are now 3-4 and will build momentum next week against Beatrice.  Nebraska Now
  • Lincoln-area high school football scores from Friday night showed key results—Syracuse won 40 to Falls City and Bellevue West beat Lincoln Southwest 44 to 7—and other matchups in Classes A to D highlighted local teams’ season challenges.  Nebraska Now
  • The No. 11 Nebraska rifle team will face UAB today at 8:00 a.m. at the Nebraska Rifle Range in Lincoln—fans can attend for free while the team, which recently set a record with a 4,729 score against Ohio State, holds a perfect record against UAB. The team will travel on Oct. 25 to compete against No. 2 Kentucky and No. 14 Army before facing more opponents on Oct. 26.  Fox Nebraska
