- ➤ After a car crashed into her metaphysical gift shop in Lincoln, Beatrix Mather—who bought the store in January—is repairing the damage and hopes to reopen soon. Lincoln Journal Star
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Early Monday morning, Honest Abe’s restaurant lost online orders when its Toast system (a service relying on Amazon Web Services) went down due to a major cloud outage, forcing staff to take orders by phone or in person and reducing typical online sales from 30-40 to 10-15 at lunch. The outage disrupted operations for several local businesses and educational institutions. Nebraska Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Big Time Rush will perform at Pinnacle Bank Arena on February 13 during their tour that visits college towns, and tickets will go on sale this Friday, October 24th—local fans can look forward to the band's popular hits from their Nickelodeon show. - ➤ The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has launched its second well-being investment by awarding Abbott-funded grants to 45 projects representing 44 student groups—using prize money from its Big Ten “We Give Blood” win to reduce event costs and boost campus well-being this fall. Nebraska Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraska’s September tax receipts fell $47 million below projections—a 6.6% shortfall mainly due to a 31% drop in corporate income tax receipts linked to the timing of ImagiNE Act credits. State officials said fiscal year receipts remain nearly flat and the Economic Forecasting Advisory Board will update the budget deficit on Oct. 31. Nebraska Examiner
- ➤ State Auditor Mike Foley’s report showed that Nebraska Lottery sales fell by over $36 million last fiscal year, cutting nearly $10 million in funds for programs such as the Environmental Trust, State Fair, and education funds, and he warned that continued increases in casino gambling may lead to further declines. - ➤ Memorial Stadium was formally dedicated on Oct. 20, 1923 on the UNL campus—accompanied by a band, parade and speeches held one day before the Huskers met Kansas on the new turf. KNOP
- ➤ Nebraska junior middle blocker Andi Jackson was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after she helped secure wins at Michigan State and Michigan—she blocked 10 times to keep opponents from scoring more. KNOP
- ➤ At Bowlin Stadium, during the NSAA State Softball Championships, St. Cecilia won a 5 to 4 walk-off and Northwest beat Beatrice 4 to 3 (both on October 20). Today, Lincoln Southwest’s Silver Hawks claimed their first state title since 2021 by scoring four runs in the third inning to beat Millard North 4 to 2 (Class A final). Nebraska Now
- ➤ Lincoln East senior Hunter Nelson made state history on Oct. 17 at Woods Tennis Center by winning his fourth straight No.1 singles state title, beating second-seeded Lincoln Southeast's Owen Brown 6-0, 6-1. He ended his career 139-0 as he joined Nebraska's top tennis players and helped his team win the Class A title. KFOR
- ➤ After a 24-6 loss to Minnesota last Friday, the Huskers try to bounce back as they host Northwestern at 11 a.m. this Saturday in Lincoln — the Wildcats are on a four-game win streak and head coach Matt Rhule will speak to the media later this week. KOLN
- ➤ The Nebraska Athletic Department announced that the Huskers will kick off their game against Northwestern this Saturday at 11 a.m. on FS1 while the home game with USC on November 1 will start at 6:30 p.m. on NBC — TV start times for the November 8 game at UCLA and the November 22 game at Penn State are still pending and the season finale against Iowa will begin at 11 a.m. on CBS.
