COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A group from One Life Church in Plattsmouth, Nebraska—a mix of doctors, nurses and builders—is in Jamaica helping with recovery efforts after Hurricane Melissa, which left at least 45 people dead over two weeks ago. They plan to stay for a week and a half and return later to help fill food shortages and other urgent needs. KOLN
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Nebraska Public Power District board approved a 3% retail and 1% wholesale rate increase during its November meeting, which will add about $5 per month to an average residential bill. The board also authorized a $30.8 million Production Cost Adjustment credit for wholesale customers—its eighth consecutive year—with CEO Tom Kent saying the utility will work to keep rates low amid rising costs. - ➤ The Nebraska Wheat Board is inviting organizations to submit funding proposals for the 2026-2027 fiscal year to support wheat research, market development, and education. Proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. CT on Jan 15 — the board will review them in February and announce funding in June. Fox Nebraska

- ➤ Chambers native Claire Woeppel was elected to the national FFA leadership team this year—she is the first Nebraskan in over a decade to serve in this role. Lincoln Journal Star
- ➤ The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications hosted Basketball Media Days on Thursday at Andersen Hall—more than 100 college students practiced interviews, group sessions and photography with local high school athletes. KOLN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nebraskans with SNAP benefits began getting partial November payments after a government funding bill was signed (ending a 43-day shutdown) and the Department issued funds following USDA guidance. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is working with federal partners (to deliver the remaining money as soon as possible) to complete the November benefits. KNOP
- ➤ Lincoln Electric System plans to replace several Haymarket transmission lines starting early January to double the power capacity delivered through the inner city—short-term parking bans and lane closures will affect the area while roads remain open. Officials held an open house at Haymarket Lazlo’s and will soon notify local businesses and residents with more details. KOLN
- ➤ Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and Health Department Director Kerry Kernen announced today that GoodToGo—a new reuse store offering free, used household products from HazToGo—has opened at 5101 N. 48th St. The store, funded by a $1.3 million grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, will operate 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and the third Saturday each month. - ➤ Farmers and ranchers welcomed the government reopening on Wednesday as it ended a 43-day shutdown and expected Congress to modernize the Farm Bill; they warned that a new comprehensive bill is needed to help young growers with challenges like a 50-cent drop per bushel and high health insurance costs.
