COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Open Harvest Co-Op near 21st Street and Capitol Parkway launched its Neighbors in Need initiative to help families cope with rising grocery prices by allowing shoppers to donate extra money at the register — marketing director Shelly Salem said the program began during the holiday season and will continue as long as funds remain on the gift card. Donors like Elizabeth Evans have stepped forward to support local families facing tight budgets.  Nebraska Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brick Days returned to Lincoln this weekend as LEGO enthusiasts showcased custom creations at the Sandhills Global Event Center — Megan Conway gave out the KOLN Award for Best Creation on Friday. Attendees are enjoying interactive games and activities today and will have more opportunities on Sunday.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Elementary welcomed veterans for an educational visit on Nov. 14, where students saw photos and memorabilia brought by the guests — helping them learn about military service. The event offered a direct look at local history and the personal stories of those who served.  KNOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services distributed all remaining November SNAP benefits to recipients after a 43-day government shutdown ended Wednesday evening. Regular SNAP payments will resume at the beginning of each month — households will receive their full benefit amounts moving forward.  KOLN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lancaster County Rural Water District No. 1 ordered residents of Bennet to boil water after E. coli was detected in November. Officials said residents should boil water for one minute and use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth until further notice.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska Poison Center urges Lincoln families to follow safe food handling guidelines this Thanksgiving by washing hands for at least 20 seconds, thawing turkey in the refrigerator or with cold water, and using a meat thermometer to ensure it reaches 165°F — the center warns that improper handling can cause foodborne illness during large meals.  Fox Nebraska

  • On Friday night, Wahoo defeated Ashland-Greenwood 61-21 in Lincoln to continue their 25-game win streak and advance to the Class C1 title game. The Warriors will face the Sidney Red Raiders at Memorial Stadium on Nov 25 at 10:15 a.m.—they aim to win back-to-back state championships.  Nebraska Now
  • On Friday night at UCLA, the No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team won 3-1 and ended its streaks of 48 consecutive set wins and 15 consecutive sweeps—Andi Jackson and Harper Murray boosted the team to a 25-0 overall and 15-0 Big Ten record. Nebraska will next play at No. 17 USC on Sunday at 2 p.m.  KFOR
