- ➤ Goodwill and Capital Humane Society announced a new downtown remote-work space called Cat Connection where visitors can work and meet adoptable cats. Construction is underway to share the location with Goodwill’s Job Connection Center (a computer lab that offers job assistance). KOLN
- ➤ Lincoln’s first ever Nerd Fest drew thousands to Sandhills Global Event Center this past weekend—organizers said the event exceeded expectations with cosplay parades, tournaments, and local vendors. The fest united fans of all ages and gave a lively boost to our community spirit. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Downtown Lincoln returns its annual holiday shopping event that guides customers through local boutiques, bookstores and art galleries to prepare for the season—boosting local business. Lincoln Journal Star
- ➤ After a 2021 accident left firefighter and farmer Eric Fass wheelchair-bound and reliant on modified equipment from Nebraska AgrAbility, he returned to farm work with his wife Amanda’s support—helping maintain their direct-to-consumer beef business—while local officials work to secure future funding amid state budget cuts. The program, which has helped many local farmers stay active despite injuries, faces an uncertain future when its current USDA grant expires next summer. KOLN

- ➤ Travelers can still find flights under $100 from Lincoln and Omaha — with some tickets costing as low as $31 — even though many holiday flights have been booked, and these deals remain available this year and in early 2026. Lincoln Journal Star
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Nebraska Lincoln was awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Energy's EPSCoR program to study quantum materials and develop energy efficient devices. Led by Professor Xia Hong and a team of seven, the two-year project will support early career scientists and students. Fox Nebraska
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Rodney Bennett finalized a plan to cut up to $27.5 million from the budget, which includes a $9 million academic cut slated for a December 5 review, department mergers to save $4 million, a buyout program for tenured faculty, and a 1% across-the-board reduction to address a structural deficit (administrative and staff efficiencies are to follow). - ➤ Lincoln city officials are proposing safety improvements at the 33rd and Adams railroad crossing as part of the 33rd and Cornhusker project, which will start in 2028. The project will cost nearly $120 million with $66 million from a federal grant, and the city council will review it before the public speaks next week. Nebraska Now
- ➤ Crash Responder Safety Week reminds drivers to slow down and move over for crash responders — police, fire and rescue, sheriff’s office and state patrol — so they can work safely at crash scenes. Nebraska’s updated Move-Over Law took effect on Sept. 3 and troopers have already cited 165 drivers for noncompliance in 2025. KFOR
