COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Eight local couples competed on Saturday night at the 4th annual Dancing Within The Star City benefit to raise about $130,000 for water safety programs run by Float 4 Life and Josh the Otter—groups founded by Blake and Kathy Collingsworth after losing their son to a drowning. The funds will support the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation in creating more water safety education materials. KOLN
- ➤ Christ Place Church hosted a drive-thru food distribution Tuesday evening at its location (1111 Old Cheney Road) to provide free food and hygiene products for families in need. About 150 volunteers used supplies from Convoy of Hope to serve up to 600 local families. KOLN
- ➤ The People’s City Mission will hand out more than 500 free turkeys at its Help Center at 6800 P St. on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. ahead of Thanksgiving to Lincoln residents who show a local Clarity card — the center will accept additional frozen turkeys and sides until Nov. 26. KOLN
- ➤ Snowplow Santa will return to Lincoln on Dec. 6 riding in an LTU snowplow to visit two libraries—Eiseley Branch from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Gere Branch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.—to let families take photos and enjoy crafts and holiday treats. The event will be canceled if bad weather occurs. KOLN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A national organization ranked Lincoln elementary schools from best to worst — nearly all top rated schools are in the southern part of the city. Lincoln Journal Star
- ➤ The commission finished its first phase of studying school funding on Tuesday and will deliver its report to the Legislature by Dec. 1—its preliminary findings showed a shift from local to state aid with local contributions declining. It will soon move into phase two—examining spending differences and exploring new revenue options for schools. Nebraska Examiner
- ➤ The UNL Faculty Senate voted 60-to-14 with three abstentions on Tuesday to show no confidence in Chancellor Rodney Bennett—marking the first such vote in the university’s 156-year history. The move comes as Bennett works to finalize $27.5 million in cuts that could remove about 50 faculty positions and reduce several degree programs, with the proposal set for review by the Board of Regents on Dec. 5—though the vote does not affect his employment directly. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Nebraska Department of Transportation is observing Crash Responder Safety Week from Nov. 17 to 21 in partnership with the State Patrol and Grand Island Police to help reduce secondary crashes. Gov. Pillen signed a proclamation that stresses driver caution and Colonel Bryan Waugh urged people to slow down and move over near crash scenes—efforts that tie into a national Traffic Incident Management program. - ➤ The Nebraska Department of Education confirmed a miscalculation in the TEEOSA formula caused Omaha Public Schools to receive about $30.5 million too much. The error will reduce state aid by around $61 million for the 2026-27 school year—though the current budget will remain unchanged. KNOP

- ➤ The staff at Lincoln's Ehlers Animal Care used a staff dog's blood donation to help save Ginger during her risky surgery. The clinic now asks local pet owners to donate their pet's blood after a health check (the donation takes about an hour). Nebraska Now
- ➤ The Nebraska Community Blood Bank is urging local donors to give blood ahead of Thanksgiving—when donations typically fall—because the region has only a four-day overall supply and type O blood is limited to three days.
