BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tyson Foods announced Friday that it will close its major beef-processing plant in Lexington (employees were notified via a letter), a decision that will affect local production.  KNOP

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lincoln Community Playhouse is staging 'Diary of Anne Frank' with police sergeant Wendi Ground returning to acting after more than 20 years as she takes on the role of Miep Gies—a part that draws on her family's World War II history. The production has two showings remaining and provides a local audience with a unique look at history and theater.  KOLN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mayor Gaylor Baird thanked local community organizations for their role in Lincoln's first Local Food Challenge, which ran from July to October and saw 21 groups place 289 orders with 38 local farmers — nearly $600,000 was spent supporting local producers. Registration for the 2026 challenge will open in late spring — the program is scheduled to run from July through October.  Fox Nebraska
  • Researchers from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy warned that rising corporate ownership of nearly 9% of residential parcels is making it harder for first-time buyers as cash offers outbid traditional bids. Lawmakers in several states have introduced measures to curb these purchases—critics say the impact is not yet proven.  Nebraska Examiner

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recent study by First Five Nebraska shows that Nebraska lost 34.9% of its child care workers between 2018—2023, the biggest drop among six Midwest states. The study also found that parent income losses rose to $1.6 billion and business productivity losses exceeded $1.7 billion as child care issues pushed parents to leave or change jobs, prompting proposals to help families and employers.  Nebraska Now
  • Lincoln Pius X announced on Friday that Head Football Coach Ryan Kearney will step down to become the Youth Athletics Outreach Coordinator while continuing to teach; the school said it will soon start searching for a new head coach as Kearney takes on duties that expand youth athletic programming—strengthening ties with local parishes and grade schools.  Nebraska Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lincoln Police Department will enforce seatbelt use from Nov. 26 to 30 during busy travel times around Thanksgiving to remind drivers to buckle up — an effort supporting the national Make It Click campaign. The project is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.  KOLN
  • On Friday, the Nebraska University Board of Regents voted unanimously to combine UNMC and UNL through joint accreditation — a decision that follows the Higher Learning Commission’s approval and aims to improve student progress tracking across both campuses.  KOLN

  • Husker head coach Dani Busboom Kelly joined LOVB Nebraska as an ambassador to boost community engagement and athlete development—helping to grow the state’s volleyball ecosystem. She will make a special appearance at the home opener at Baxter Arena on Jan. 11—where LOVB Houston will be the opponent.  Nebraska Now
  • Nebraska head coach and Husker legend Dani Busboom Kelly joined LOVB Nebraska as an ambassador to support youth programs—she will boost community engagement and help lead professional volleyball development.
