COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A report from Housing Innovations recommended that a 60-bed low-barrier shelter be built downtown (to help over 2,700 people expected to be homeless by 2026) when the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners reviews funding options to cover operating costs between $800,000 and $1 million.  KOLN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Public Schools Career Academy celebrated its early childhood education program Tuesday by awarding certificates to students and hosting a networking event with local childcare providers in Lincoln. The program gives high school students hands-on experience to prepare for careers in a field facing high demand.  KOLN
  • The UNL Board of Regents cut four programs last week, affecting North Platte student Amy Sabatka (one of many facing new deadlines) in the Education Administration doctorate program. UNL said it would help current students finish their coursework despite ongoing uncertainty.  KOLN
  • UNK released its proposal on Tuesday, Dec. 9, to address a $4.5 million deficit by potentially cutting five programs and adjusting staffing; university officials are accepting feedback before final decisions on Dec. 22 (input from faculty and advisory committees shaped the plan).  Nebraska Now

  • Bomb squad technician Adam Hoffmann of Lincoln Fire and Rescue manages hazardous device calls at Station 8 (renovated in 2025) while staying on call every other day and balancing extensive training with home life; he handles about 50 risky calls a year to keep the community safe.  Nebraska News Service

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Nebraska’s volleyball team earned postseason honors as junior setter Bergen Reilly and first-year head coach Dani Busboom Kelly were named AVCA West Region Player and Coach of the Year (the Huskers led the region with seven honorees, five on the All-Region Team).  KNOP
  • Monster Jam is returning to Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3. Presale tickets will be available starting Dec. 11 at 10 a.m.  Fox Nebraska
  • At a Tuesday press conference, Huskers Coach Matt Rhule confirmed hiring Georgia Tech offensive line coach Geep Wade and San Diego State defensive coordinator Rob Aurich ahead of the Nebraska bowl game while also firing the defensive line coach.
