COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Heartland United Way assisted 2,303 families with holiday toys, provided 1,296 food vouchers, and supported 36 families with gifts and food in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick counties during the season.  KOLN
  • Troop 8 in Lincoln has continued its 11-year Christmas tree cleanup by collecting unsold trees from local businesses Friday; the trees will be mulched, serve as habitat, or be donated, and collections will resume New Year's Day with a final pickup on Jan. 10.  KOLN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska will set its minimum wage at $15 per hour in January 2026 after annual $1.50 increases (and it will later adjust based on cost of living), while some local business owners warn the change may cut hours and benefits with rural areas hit hardest.  KNOP
  • Nebraska is among 22 states raising its minimum wage starting Jan. 1 as part of a broader effort to boost pay amid affordability concerns. Experts note that while higher wages may help vulnerable workers, some companies could pass extra costs to consumers.  KNOP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services proposes to cut Medicaid waiver caregiver hours from 112 to 70 a week (limiting paid hours for live-in care to 40), a change that local families fear may reduce vital at-home support for disabled and elderly Nebraskans.  KNOP

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Dec. 26, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule and safety DeShon Singleton held a media availability for the LV Bowl on video. Earlier, NICU babies spread holiday cheer at Great Plains Health, North Platte named holiday lights winners, and Santa visited Super Suds car wash—bringing joy to the community.  KNOP
