- ➤ A red magnolia tree was planted at Nebraska Wesleyan University to honor former track athlete Eric Smoyer, who died from cancer on April 22, 2024. Family and friends gathered on Saturday, April 26, 2025, to dedicate the tree at a spot between the indoor track and outdoor track—places where he spent much time as a student athlete. - ➤ Federal health officials canceled nearly $100 million in COVID-related grants meant to support local programs for vaccinations and disease tracking, leaving Nebraska health departments with less money to protect the community—officials say the cuts, effective March 24, force them to pull funds from other programs and could delay responses to outbreaks like measles. - ➤ On Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Nebraska’s Ty Robinson with the 111th pick in the NFL Draft’s fourth round. The 6-foot-5 defensive tackle—who set a Nebraska record by playing 60 games and recorded 48 tackles in 2024 while running a 4.83-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine—will join his former teammate Cam Jurgens in Philadelphia.
