  • A local guide lists five weekend events in Lincoln—Zen’s Annual Tailgate Party is at 1339 O St. today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Bugsy’s Best runs at 7701 Pioneers Blvd from noon to 7 p.m., and Immanuel Lutheran Church hosts a family block party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Jigsaw Puzzle Competition is set for Sunday at 129 N. 10th St. until 5 p.m., while a Book Club meeting at Escape Lincoln runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Lincoln Journal Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Police caught 63-year-old Lynn Cavanaugh (found sleeping in a tent with a stolen E-bike) on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. near Oak Creek in northwest Lincoln after officers discovered two bags of drugs and an explosive device containing over 431 times the legal powder limit; he had asked for hospital help before being arrested on charges of controlled substance and explosive possession.  Nebraska Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last year, the University of Nebraska Foundation broke its record by raising over $416 million to fund student scholarships, academic programs, athletic teams, faculty, research and capital projects across the system. The drive included contributions from 60,602 individuals and marks an increase from the previous year’s $388.8 million — nearly all gifts were designated to specific purposes.  Lincoln Journal Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that individual members can challenge Lincoln gun regulations—while the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association lacks the legal standing to sue. The case, which contests an order banning weapons from city vehicles and properties, will now move to Lancaster County District Court for review.  Nebraska Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lincoln hospitals celebrated the launch of the State Directed Payment Program that helps keep hospitals financially stable and care for patients in rural areas after LB1087 passed by a 45—0 vote. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved the program on June 27 and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services made the first payment in late August—ensuring hospitals receive federal funds without increasing costs for taxpayers.  Fox Nebraska

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team swept Lipscomb 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 in front of a record crowd of 4,235 at Allen Arena. The win improved the Huskers to 3-0, and they will face No. 7 Kentucky on Sunday at 11 a.m. on ABC.  KNOP
  • Nebraska Football won 20-17 over Cincinnati in their season-opener at GEHA Field at Arrowhead, with Malcolm Hartzog-Jr intercepting a pass with 39 seconds left to secure the win. Quarterback Dylan Raiola passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and the Huskers will host Akron on September 6 at 6:30 p.m.  KFOR
