CRIME NEWS

  • Federal immigration agents arrested Melvin Varela Perez on July 9 with help from local law enforcement and Flock Safety cameras—whose logs show over 20 immigration-related searches from January through June—that helped narrow the suspect's location while officials said the system is used only for criminal cases.  KNOP

  • Oglala Lakota elder Frank Bear Killer watched as dozens of Native American dancers celebrated Indigenous culture at the Indian Center’s 51st annual Powwow at William Canby Arena in Lincoln on Saturday—bringing together multiple generations with traditional regalia, music and conversation.  KOLN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal immigration agents arrested Melvin Varela Perez on July 9 in Omaha using license plate readers and thanked local police and Flock Safety for helping catch him — the system also recorded searches tied to MS-13 that have raised local privacy concerns among community groups.  KOLN
  • Beginning Sept. 1, the City of Lincoln and Lincoln Electric System offer homeowners up to $3,800 in heat pump installation incentives to reduce energy costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Homeowners can get $500 for replacing an old heat pump or $1,500 for replacing an air conditioner — low- to moderate-income residents may receive up to $3,000 while funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Lincoln Journal Star
  • The city of Lincoln and Lincoln Electric System announced that heat pump incentives will be available beginning Monday to help homeowners lower energy costs and improve efficiency. Homeowners may receive up to $3,800—and funds are available on a first-come basis with a total of $250,000 supporting the program.  KOLN
  • Residents are invited to a design open house meeting hosted by Lincoln Transportation and Utilities at West Lincoln Elementary School gymnasium, Door 9 on Sept. 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—they will offer input on plans to replace traffic signals and update pavement, sidewalks, curb ramps, and a nearby trail at the intersection of N 1st Street and Cornhusker Highway, with construction possibly starting in 2027 at an estimated cost of $3.8 million funded by Highway Allocation and federal funds.  Lincoln Journal Star

  • The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department released its third video—Nutrition and Hydration from the 6 Pillars for Emotional Wellbeing series—that shows how food and water help children stay healthier. A new video will be released each month through November.  KFOR
